Flooding

A flooding update

A further flooding update this evening with a bit of good news.

Oxford’s Abingdon Road has now reopened.

However, it will remain closed from Old Abingdon Road to Weirs Lane so fire crews can continue to pump water away. Signed diversions will be in place.

The High Street bus gate, which was temporarily opened, is now back in operation.

Most of the roads closed in Henley due to the flooding have now reopened, including both sides of Thames Side, Riverside, and New Street. There remains a closure at Sonning Bridge and at Playhatch (B478).

Other highways are being monitored regularly and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. Both Redbridge and Seacourt Park and Rides are still impacted by flooding. The Oxford Parkway, Thornhill and Pear Tree are operating and people are encouraged to use these sites.

While we have 21 flood warnings and 29 flood alerts in the county, the forecast over the next few days remains dry, with the possibility of snowy showers, so we expect the water to continue to slowly recede. As before, this will take time.A reminder that people can their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation from the Environment Agency at gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding. Flooding

A flooding update

Following Saturday’s flooding update, the general picture for Oxfordshire is improving but there remains 24 flood warnings and 30 flood alerts in the county. Water is moving downstream heading from Oxford to other parts of the Thames Valley and the expected highest levels of the Thames have now been reached between Henley and Marlow going through Hurley. The forecast for dry weather remains the same over the next few days with the potential for light, possibly snowy, showers in some areas.

Please be aware that Abingdon Road remains closed. A diversion is in place on Thames Street towards Folly Bridge and Abingdon Road (apart from local access). The situation is being closely monitored and firefighters are still active pumping water away but the water has not receded enough to reopen the road. Access can be gained through the High Street bus gates until the water levels are again at passable levels.
Thameside South and Station Road in Henley also closed yesterday and remain closed as water levels rose further on the stretches of the Thames through the town and nearby areas. Approximately 15 roads are closed in the county, mainly in South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse.

The gritters were out in force last night and are going out again tonight from 7pm as temperatures have dropped. All partners are encouraging motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to take extra care when travelling given that the presence of so much standing water will exacerbate ice hazards. You are kindly asked to support this messaging as well as encourage residents to check on their neighbours.

As well as some partners in the Thames Valley responding to the flood risks and warnings, with some yet to see the highest impact, we are also now planning for recovery. Both an Oxfordshire working group and a Thames Valley resilience group will be set up over the next couple of days to facilitate this. However, it is clear that water levels will remain high and flood barriers and other resources may still be required in the county until the end of the week.

A reminder that people can their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation from the Environment Agency at gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding. Flooding

A flooding update

All agencies including the county council, the city and district councils, the Environment Agency, the police and fire and rescue service, and many others, have been working very closely together on responding to the flooding situation and will continue to do so over the coming days. Partners are working together both locally and as part of the Thames Valley Resilience Forum using long established planning for such incidents. Staff from all agencies are out on the ground to minimise the impact of the floods and to warn and inform our communities.

The county council’s fire and rescue service, highways teams and emergency planning teams remain very active in helping communities suffering from flooding and will remain so until waters subside. On Thursday, they worked through the night during the heavy rain to help communities experiencing flooding. They were particularly active again last night in the south of Oxfordshire, notably in Abingdon and Dorchester. Social care teams are ensuring that vulnerable people are helped if needed.

Oxford’s Abingdon Road is closed but access can be gained through the High Street bus gates until the water levels are again at passable levels. The fire and rescue service has been pumping floodwater away from this area.

While both Redbridge and Seacourt Park and Rides are impacted by flooding, the Oxford Parkway, Thornhill and Pear Tree are operating and people are encouraged to use these sites.

Flood defences are in place at Osney Island and Vicarage Lane in Oxford and at South Hinksey just to the west of the city.
The Thames water levels have stabilised up stream and around Oxford. But they will remain high for another few days. The Environment Agency and Met Office does not forecast rain currently for the next five days.

Partners across the Thames Valley will continue to work together over the weekend to assess the risk of any further flooding and provide support to communities. We are urging people to stay safe and to remember to take extreme care while walking beside swollen rivers.

Flooding of low-lying roads is also possible and people must avoid driving through flood water, as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move a car. Residents are advised to check one.network for road closure updates.

People should check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation from the Environment Agency at gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding. You are advised to direct residents to this website and to X (formerly known as Twitter) @EnvAgencySE for timely updates. Residents can call the Environment Agency’s flooding hotline for advice and support at any time, seven days a week, on 0345 988 1188. Our news webpage also contains helpful information and signposting and is being updated regularly.

Colder weather is due in the next few days. Standing water could lead to ice hazards. The county council’s gritting crews are ready to respond if required.
