The Cemetery is located through the churchyard at St Mary’s Church, Burford Road, Black Bourton, OX18 2PF and is open to visitors every day of the year.  Please always respect the privacy of other visitors and maintain any social distancing guidelines that may be in place.  Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead and dog waste disposed of in the Household Waste bins provided.

There are Garden Waste and Household Waste bins located in the Bin Store near the entrance to the Cemetery. The bins are clearly labelled. Please help us keep this area tidy and ensure your waste goes into the correct bins.

The Exclusive Right of Burial (EROB) for a grave or ashes plot can be purchased for a period of 50 years and entitles the owner to place a memorial stone on the grave and to be buried in the plot themselves in the future (space permitting). It can be transferred to another person by a legal process on application to the Town Council. The holder of the EROB is required to give their permission before a grave can be reopened or a memorial erected.

To purchase the EROB if this was not done at the time of burial, please use the Application Form below. On the death of the EROB holder, the Rights will need to be transferred to another person, which will be required to add an inscription to the headstone. A Transfer form is below.

Information Sheet for Grave Owners

The Cemetery is maintained by Carterton Town Council. The Council’s contractor cuts the grass and carries out routine maintenance of hedges and paths. The Town Warden puts out the waste bins weekly and generally keeps the Cemetery looking tidy. Grave owners are responsible for looking after their own graves and ashes plots, but the Council reserves the right to attend to any unmaintained plots. The Cemetery is regularly inspected and the safety of memorials checked. Grave owners will be contacted if any problems are found. Please let us know if you notice anything that needs our attention.

All burials and ashes interments should be arranged through a funeral director, who will liaise with the Town Council to set a date and book a grave or ashes plot.  Local funeral directors are:

Co-operative Funeral Care

E Taylor & Son

  • 21 Corbett Road,  Carterton, OX18 3LG
  • Tel: 01993 842421

This should be done through a BRAMM or NAMM accredited stonemason.  Stonemasons who regularly carry out work at the Cemetery are Banbury Memorials and The Co-operative Memorials, who can be contacted via the local funeral directors above.  Be aware that only the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial for a grave or ashes plot can arrange for a memorial and that person is responsible for its maintenance.
