Opening of the Sensory Garden – Market Square
A huge thank you to Emma Phillips from West Oxfordshire District Council, who officially opened the Carterton Trefoil Guild Sensory Garden situated in the Market Square adjacent to the Town Hall in September 2022.
There is growing evidence that sensory gardens are extremely important for peoples health and wellbeing as they allow people a relaxing and therapeutic open space which is safe for them to explore, sit quietly, reflect, and experience nature. Sensory gardens can be particularly beneficial for children and people with a disability in terms of encouraging discovery and explorative skills, promoting language and communication skills, can help to improve and develop emotional, physical, and mental health.
Pam Howard, spokesperson for the Guild, thanked everyone involved in the project. A special mention went to the following: West Oxfordshire District Council who helped to finance the venture, Laurence, Toby, Tom, and Deia from UBICO for their work creating the garden, Kay, Katie, Alex and Teresa at the Town Council for their practical help and advice, Josh for the wonderful planters, Evie at Morrisons for pebbles and plants, Asda for donating bags of compost, and the Town Council for donating the land, memorial bench, and the installing of the water feature and electrics.
After the cutting of the ribbon, Nick Leverton, Mayor of Carterton at the time, was delighted to invite the party to join him in a celebratory cup of tea and biscuits to commemorate the event.
